The Alexandria Harmonizers, Alexandria’s own internationally acclaimed a cappella performing group, will celebrate their 75th diamond anniversary with a special performance Sept. 9 at the Rachel M Schlesinger Concert Hall on the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College.
“This is Why We Sing: A 75th Anniversary Celebration,” will feature chorus favorites as well as custom arrangements. Also on stage will be the Harmonizers’ newest ensemble, Metro Voices, as well as gold medal winning quartets Max Q and Ringmasters.
The Harmonizers were chartered on June 19, 1948, and have for 75 years traveled the world educating, entertaining, and performing to enthusiastic audiences. Noted by Broadway World to offer “some of the best choral singing” in the area, the Harmonizers specialize in one of a cappella’s most challenging forms, four-part close harmony.
Led by artistic director Joe Cerutti since 2007, the chorus is made up of nearly 100 volunteer singers ranging in age from 18 to 85. The Harmonizers have won 20 international medals, including four championship gold medals, and recently won the 3rd place Bronze medal at the 2022 Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Competition.
The Harmonizers now feature two ensembles, having recently launched a sister ensemble known as Metro Voices.
The special 75th anniversary performance takes place Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
